A book is not judged by its cover, but your résumé might be

When we choose our life partners, books or even things such as computers or phones, appearance is not what we care about the most. It is inside, it is so-called “content”.

In the same way, you might think about employers and potential employees that candidates are chosen only by a resume content. You might also think that your resume looks don’t really matter if you are not applying for a designer’s job. You are mistaken. Let me tell you why.

Sometimes you have only a few seconds

The study by The Ladders shows that recruiters usually spend only about 6 seconds reviewing a resume. During this time they take a glance at your name, your current and previous job position titles and education — that’s about it.

Additional time spent reading your resume is the one of the most important factors defining your future as a potential candidate. So, how is it possible to get more than a few seconds of attention? You need something substantial that will make you stand out from the crowd. Only a high quolity resume will catch the attention and will make recruiter look for a little more than for your name and picture.

Your resume is you

A resume is all you have before a job interview. It represents you not only as a worker but also as a human being. If your resume layout is a huge mess, your employer has a right to think that you are a messy person. Use your resume design as a tool to show that you care about that job, make it speak for you and demonstrate how responsible, caring and hard-working you are.

Your resume design represents you in the same way your clothes do.

Design controls the attention

Usually, it’s a reader (your employer) who chooses what to read and what to not. However, if your resume is not a plain text and has at least some kind of a design, you can guide your reader. Having a designed resume gives you an ability to distinguish some things more than others and in this way you can control your reader’s focus. It’s very important to visually invite your future employer to read more about your accomplishments because it’s the only way to prove you are better than the others. A good looking resume can definitely help you achieve that.

Being memorable is important

Your employer probably has seen a few dozens of different resumes today. You might be the most qualified or the most experienced candidate of all, but nothing will help you if you won’t be memorable. If your resume looks impressive enough, you may be the first person that comes into your employer’s head when it’s time to choose the candidate.

Research shows that people are much more likely to forget information in black and white than in colors. So, even little additions such as a colored background or a few icons can help you land your dream job.

Resume style is as important as its content. Having a badly designed resume can greatly decrease your chances of landing a job — all your hard work you have put in your resume text might be dismissed within a few seconds because of how it looks. Your employer might think that you don’t even want that job. Keep in mind that this little sheet of paper can change your life, so don’t mess it up and prepare not only a good content but also a perfect look.
