Since I first dabbled in comics as a scholarly endeavor, writing and presenting a paper on gender representations on Marvel’s long-lived super teams, the landscape of comics scholarship has really blown up.

Selected readings in HON315 — Comics, Culture & Politics at Southern Oregon University this term.

Not that long ago, about 10 years ago, you could definitely find a footprint of peer-reviewed scholarship. But the methodological range was pretty slim, and the heaviest attention was paid to prestige comics from independent publishers and auteurist creators.

As noted in my earliest Medium post about the Comic Studies course I am teaching in the Honors College at Southern Oregon University this term, I have been presented with a lovely opportunity to refresh my interest in comics as a research endeavor, and the students of HON315 — Comics, Culture & Politics have responded with delightful energy to the topic, despite my best efforts to ruin comics by framing them in political terms. …


As we have marched through HON315 — Comics, Culture & Politics, an Honors College course at Southern Oregon University, the tension among social scientific, critical and aesthetic methods of systematic inquiry has constantly followed me and my students.

Misreading Batman in the Frank Miller way

However, a distinctively literary paradigm for understanding comics took the stage at the midpoint of our term, as we read Frank Miller’s revisionary take on The Dark Knight Returns, supported by the insights of Geoff Klock’s How to Read Superhero Comics and Why, especially his chapter on the Dark Knight and Alan Moore’s Watchmen.

Klock adapts Harold Bloom’s theory of revisionary influence to superhero comics, proposing Miller’s Batman as the first great poetic misprision in the superhero genre. In the Dark Knight, Miller responds to the strong poetics of earlier Batman narratives via Bloom’s revisionary ratio of clinamen, swerving from the source material in exactly the correct manner to perfect it. …

Comics & Politics: Learning to see ideology everywhere in Frank Miller’s 300, and other comics & graphic novels.

Among my commitments in teaching an Honors College course in Comic Studies this term, I have spent a lot of instructional capital connecting the students of Southern Oregon University’s HON315 with the larger frameworks by which scholars have traditionally studied mass media.

We have explored Media Effects, Audience Reception, Cultural Studies and other approaches to empirical and critical studies of media, especially spending time last week on Mythologies by Roland Barthes, the role of ideology in the normalization of culture, and his methods for describing and interpreting everyday life.

In their blog posts this week, students have exercised those same skills for recognizing denotation and connotation in the media, directly applied to comic book texts:
