Journalism students at the University of Ghana brought an African twist to News Engagement Day 2019, as they ventured into their community to explore the ideals and realities of news in the digital age on Oct. 1, 2019.

Organized by the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC), News Engagement Day creates an opportunity for educators and students to highlight and explore values of strong journalism through a modern filter. Like students across North America, a Ghanaian cohort in the Department of Communication Studies took to the Internet and joined a global conversation about journalism via the hashtag #NewsEngagementDay on Twitter and Instagram.

These students talked to people, made photos, and connected to communities face-to-face and online. Click any of the images in the grid below to see their individual reports:

I helped to connect Ghanaian students with News Engagement Day in my role as a 2019–20 Fulbright U.S. Scholar, also with the support of my UG teaching colleagues Audrey Gadzekpo and Ivy Mingyase Fofie. During a sabbatical year from my home institution at Southern Oregon University, I will continue to work with Ghanaian students and faculty on practices of multimedia journalism and innovation in Africa.
