When I was younger I learned how yo play the guitar. I was no expert whatsoever but I could find my way around a fret board ( I still can to some extent). I even performed a few times, at the end of the semester and these kind of events at school. Usually with a band, sometimes it was just me and a singer. However I’ve never been able to sing myself at all. But I thought to myself that if only I would be able to sing I would’ve been great. A one man band both able to play music and sing, I would be the sole star of the show!
Beginning my career as a developer I started off working exclusively with front-end, just hacking html templates with not even touching the javascript to make it actually do something, my colleagues handled that for me. Eventually however i grew more and more in to the role of a back end developer as well. Since just sitting around and waiting for data is no fun, why not try to code it yourself? Progressing even further it just came naturally that I handled most of the client side code, whether it was backbone or angular, myself as well. Because again, when I spent all this time crunching data, why not make something cool with it.
It all came pretty naturally, my colleagues and mentors at Will & Skill has of course been a great part of my learning experience. Giving me tasks that at times seemed too hard to handle they gave me no choice but to learn. And there probably is no better way of learning, than by doing.
So nowadays there is no more ‘what if I could do this, what if I could do that’. Just by knowing javascript you can dish out back-ends, mobile apps as well as one page web applications.
Knowing all this is like I touched on in a previous post, really powerful. It’s easier than ever to be your own one man band. Go out and make something great with it.
