Types of usability testing methodologies in web development
Usability is the standard of measuring the comfort level of users while using a particular product. Manufacturers & owners always aim to develop user-friendly products to offer maximum level satisfaction for end users. Whether they are producing machines and tools or offering IT & computing solutions like software and websites, usability becomes the ultimate reason to decide the future of product. Only an adaptable and easy to use product ensure ultimate success.
Ensuring usability is critically important in the case of website development. It is defined as the comfort level of an average person visited a website for first time. Wide availability of well-developed websites have informed users. They don’t take much time to figure out if a site is not usable. This makes it inevitable to create website with maximum usability. California web development companies are planning and taking strategic initiatives to create websites comprising all components of usability that include learnability, memorability, efficiency, errors and user-satisfaction.
Below I am sharing basic types of usability testing methodologies, which are widely followed in web development to ensure quality of a website.
Hallway/Moderate In-Person Testing
This methodology uses random people to test the website. Often a facilitator and a participant work together in the lab and test website for the first time during development. Although it doesn’t involve professionals trained in website testing, hallway testing deliver genuine results.
Remote usability testing/Moderate remote
As its name clearly indicates that it involves people from different locations. In simple words individuals testing the website are from different origins and time zones. Whereas, facilitator belongs to other zones. This kind of website usability testing can be performed in number of different ways. From video conferencing, and screen sharing to the use of computer monitoring software, usability testing is performed by testers who are not actually professional testers. It automatically records click location, user stream and critical incidents, if it occurred while using or testing a website. It also allows users to submit any feedback. Testing methodology allow users to complete all tasks in normal environment.
Unmoderated Remote/Expert Review
It involves expert evaluators to test the usability of a website. An administrator sets a bunch of test for people interacting with website. Automated and remote tests are conducted and results are forwarded for expert review. However, automated expert test do not offer detailed report as compared to rest of the usability test.
Endnote: These are the three major kinds of usability testing, which web developers are performing across the world to deliver products with maximum usability.
