4chan: The Skeleton Key to the Rise of Trump

Wonderful piece, Dale. Sadly, I think even with your thorough and measured account, this explanation will fall on deaf ears (across party lines). People don’t seem to want to get it, perhaps because the truth hear is more bewildering and pathetic than we want to acknowledge. I found your comparison to Arendt’s writing to be apt — these immature men feel disenfranchised, powerless, failures that have been wronged by society, and women in particular. Because they have found solidarity online with a group of like-minded losers reclaiming what is rightfully theirs by disrupting a system they cannot comprehend and are thus outsiders from, they feel emboldened.
I’d go further to expand on anon’s spread from 4chan across the internet, to more obscure forums, and of course reddit. Organized, juvenile hatred towards an America that doesn’t reward them seems to have spread across the web like wildfire, all the while the left has been in an echo chamber of its own.
