I think it’s pretty simple: some members of oppressed groups like it. Others don’t. That leaves people free to make their own best decision. Meanwhile, it’s not clear to me that the safety pins themselves have caused any harm, but it is clear to me that attacking people for wearing them has caused harm, by further dividing a community that should be unifying in mutual support. The idea of pick your battles comes to mind. It seems like anymore on the left, every detail is a hill to die on. (And I am a proud leftist!)
