I stopped focusing on myself and got better at paying attention to what was happening around me. I learned about this moment when you’re just at the tip of the break: You’ve done the work to get out there, you’ve waited for the right swell, you’ve paddle hard to get in front of it, and just as you start thinking you need to force yourself on to it…you wait just a moment longer and suddenly the wave drops you, and carries you down the face. That moment is really nice.
