E10 — Week One in Review and Week Two/Three Preview


We had a successful first week of school in English 10. Students completed a survey to share more about their academic histories and personal goals for the year.

E10 — Cox — Student Learning Preferences.

The chart above shows an overwhelming preference for working independently and in small groups to complete the reading and writing tasks of English 10. I too believe these conditions will help to foster academic and interpersonal growth. In the next two weeks we will be working to establish the basic routines and procedures to support small group writing workshops and independent reading time.

We already dipped our toes into narrative writing (our first major unit of the year) by crafting 6 word memoirs on Friday (8/25). The memories spanned from early childhood to the first days of Sophomore year. The memoir below says a lot about navigating the halls of the high school.

I also sent out a survey to families and received 95 responses. THANK YOU to all of the families that took time to tell me more about your students. Here are some big picture results.

It is clear families want frequent communication about both the academic and social/emotional growth of students. I’m crafting plans now to meet these preferences. Please reach out at any time with questions or concerns.


Many of you committed to talking with your student about how you use reading and writing in your job. I ask that you have those conversations this week. Next week in English 10 we’ll research the reading demands of various career choices. This research, and your conversations, connect with the career interest lessons currently being done in homerooms.
