Cafe Lies and Pre-Paid Waffle Endorsements.

The most overrated food businesses tend to come with the most beautiful interiors. Just my opinion.

Through my search for the perfect hangout in the little sunny island of Singapore, I can say that I have easily tasted the delicious promises of at least 40 different cafes. But…I still go to Starbucks for a reliable cup of sludge.

You see following the likes of Singapore’s most famed “food bloggers” I found myself travelling across all over the island, to the most ulu(deserted) of locations just to sample myself that good ole cup of Joe. But 80% of the time, I always found myself disappointed with what was promised (Thanks LIC).

So through this array of disappointment, I started to wonder. Why in the hell were these cafes endorsed by these astound “food bloggers” when they sometimes can’t even make a decent cup of coffee? Their food most of the time were incredibly poor too. I’m no food critic. But I know F&B well enough that I sensed a disturbance in the cafe industry (Obviously it goes beyond just cafes but hopefully you get my drift).

But you don’t need to be a genius for me to tell you that majority of food bloggers are sponsored. I pay you to eat at my place, you raise the profile of my place, I make money. Seems perfect no? Well. If your food, service and overall ambience sucks, all you are doing is creating a bunch of unhappy customers at the speed of light.

My only real concern is where has all the REAL food critics gone?

Why have we accepted that every food review about Singapore’s cafes/restaurants tend to be a positive one? Why are we allowing ourselves to be held ransom to less than acceptable food & services at such high prices? Where have that real food critic. The one with experience. Proper knowledge and that incorruptible soul gone?

Dear Cafe/Restaurant business,

Here is an example of how to be truly unique in this ever changing and super competitive market.

This cafe in Australia has recently been making the locals go mad for their shakes especially. Does it take a lot of effort? I doubt. Look at how sexy their food looks. Would it require a big cleanup? Most likley. But are their customers happy? Fuck yeah.

Regards,
A Paying Customer

Look. I am not smashing the cafes in Singapore but I am expressing that as a food lover, a person that gives you money for your business, I deserve better. Singaporeans deserve better. We are paying outrages prices for food that barely deserve any hype and service that would make the average Japanese waiter weep.

It should no way be about the customers giving in to cafe/restaurant businesses to their prices & terrible food just because it is the trending place to be. Nor should it be by a food blogger(with no F&B knowledge or experience) who gets paid thousands for their “honest reviews”. It should be about legit businesses doing their everything for the customer’s happiness. It should be actual people who knowledge and experience who truly understands the issues F&B businesses face.

All I am really asking for is an honest blogger (One with some F&B experience would be great too!). One that is not at all afraid to give it to an overrated food business because it is definitely not just cafes. It is this industry overall.

Since the Michelin guide is one that is only for fine dining restaurants (Why the hell are they avoiding Singapore too btw?), we need another proper rating/critiquing system for our everyday dining. Not endless new platforms for promoting terrible food but rather one that would help businesses change for the better too. Not just attack but rather one that can give valuable advice and consultation on how they can improve for the customers.

Because Seriously Seriously Seriously.

The Customer is Always Right.
