Escape The Room — AR

I hope you all had a great Easter and are ready to kick off a great spring! Lots of work to do in the app, right now I’m working on the best system for placing objects in the room. The initial object placement/UX of AR is to me the biggest hurdle. People have to clumsily scan a scene, and most people haven’t used AR before so they don’t really know what that means. The system that I have currently has a person walk around their room, and then it automatically places the objects.

The tutorial screen for someone placing the objects

The person then has the ability to manual place objects if the placement isn’t correct.

Someone dragging cubes into position. Might need to rethink this one.

What I’m now thinking is that people just manually place right away. As long as a user can get one plane detected on their surface, ARKit’s infinite plane detection would let them place the cubes easily throughout the room. I’ll probably go with this as the final solution, and make any updates as I hear feedback. Its a little annoying having put so much work into the prior tutorial, but thats okay! You live and you learn. Next up is finishing the last puzzle in the “heaven” room, and from there its just tying lots of pieces together. Don’t forget to follow on Twitter, and reach out if you have any questions!
