Response to 5 Design Jobs That Won’t Exist in the Future
I actually read this article a few weeks ago and found myself both inspired and nervous by it because my resume reads both “UX Designer” and “Design Researcher”.
I could not agree more that the term “UX designer” has come to mean anything and nothing at the same time. When I was hired for my first design job they said I had a gift for UX design and upon being hired I realized we had 2 different ideas of what that really meant. I can absolutely see this role breaking into more specialized segments, but I do not see it disappearing completely as long as we are designing for humans. Human interaction and critique is crucial to making successful designs.
I already see the merge of UX and visual design happening. To be most affective one cannot be strong in just one area. It will be interesting to see if a platform is created that allows people to put in facts about the primary users of the site and give back the most successful type of layouts for that type of user. However, it cannot only be left to algorithms because they are unable to understand human ethics, interaction, and desire like a human can… but maybe this is old school thinking.
The design researcher opinion of the article hit me the deepest because it is a new found love for me. As stated previously, I do not think that machines could replace true human interaction when it comes to understanding users. Machines may be able to spit out data, but will people trust a product if they have not actually interacted with the human behind the design? I think there is something authentic about getting out from behind a computer and interacting with people who will actually use your design. I can argue that at times people will say they want/need one thing but interact with a design completely differently which leaves space for machines to replace the human interaction. I hope that there is a merging of the two — higher technology that provides trends and data to compliment human trust and interactions.
