How to settle a CONCACAF/CONMEBOL merger

USA and Argentina are the current champions of their respective confederations

Over the last few years (since 2018/2019), I’ve been thinking about a merger between the South American confederation CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol), and the North and Central American confederation, CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football). Every now and then, its a topic that keeps cropping up over the last few years.

Though nothing is wrong with CONMEBOL, the issue lies within CONCACAF. Since 2002 when Canada won the Gold Cup, no other nation other than Mexico, or the USA has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and qualified for the World Cup, with the exception of 2018 when the USA unexpectedly failed to qualify. Other nations have come close, but its always the same two names that keep coming up.

Back to the topic at hand, how do the decision-makers at the top go about improving competition within the Americas? Well, here’s one idea. To improve CONCACAF football, I’ve devised a qualification structure for a potential tournament between both confederations. Who wouldn’t want to see the likes of Canada, Mexico, USA, and to a degree, Costa Rica playing the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay? Let us look lower down. A matchup such as Peru v Panama or Paraguay v Costa Rica wouldn’t be bad, would it?
