Peace,

To begin, I am introducing myself to Software Engineering. Scouring through educational programs, introductory courses and seminars, I’ve been led to devote myself to self disciplined studies of Computer IT. Now, what direction to go? Where to start? Computers know more than one language!? Who knew they even talked. My questions were endless, but my goal and aspirations were concise and clear. I am going to be a Software Engineer creating my own projects. This drive led me to daringly put myself out there and start asking where is square one?

Through an app, I was directed to WWCode Atlanta. Their page featured the WWCode Datapy Conference, occurring within the next 2 days. Scanning through the event, I was eager to meet these other women who love technology as much as I, and so volunteered to assist with the conference set up. It would be to even be behind the scenes of the precept of this event, as a rook to the field. I was accepted, and, the next day walking up to Honeywell to assist. I was nervous and excited at all once.

I was greeted and directed to where we’d be convening and immediately welcomed and introduced to the team. Everything already looked so organized and everyone was immersed in their role, I hardly wanted to distract them. As I began to work on what I was assigned, my series, of what I thought were silly or newb-ish, questions spilled out. All of my naive inquisition was invited by everyone in the room. They genuinely appeared to love being involved with the program and also their avenue or association with it. Throughout the day, not only was I guided to new areas of understanding, definitions to my concepts and the actuality of what women in technology looks like but what the people consist of and the passion that breeds this organization. Following the conference set-up was the VIP Meet & Greet, where all the integrating aspects that make this Conference were able to more intimately create connections and speak on the enthusiasm and direction they had for the next day. It was awesome to pick the minds and perspectives of the leaders not only for WWCode but globally influencing and innovating the world of tech.

The following day, due to my volunteer work, I was awarded the opportunity to attend and assist at the actual Conference. I was already extremely grateful to have gotten an inspirational and informative experience the day prior. I was now going to be able to observe these astounding ladies speak on their professions. From the speakers, to the host Honeywell, WWCode ATL team, other volunteers and attendees everyone was as honest, joyful, friendly and encouraging as the next. Everything had turned out elegantly and efficiently. The environment that is created from the values Women Who Code breeds is clearly one meant to integrate, progress, teach, assist and welcome anyone that enters.

I feel my direction in Computer Information is more defined and has expanded to more avenues I didn’t know existed. The insight and experience everyone shared with me created more dedication to my interest, discipline for my studies and feeling of exuberance to see what i can create. Just from this sudden entrance into the Women Who Code platform I know I have a team of mentors, colleagues and friends always ready to aid with project problems, collaborate on ideas with and motivate me to continue pursuing this field. This has been a wonderful, knowledge filled experience that I wish to share others.
