“Loki” (Season 1) is an enjoyable subversion of Marvel’s standard

In preparation for the cataclysmic season 2 finale this week, let’s take a look at Loki’s first protagonistic outing. This show was the only Marvel show on Disney+ that I enjoyed thoroughly and was completely surprised by. Unlike WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye, Loki goes to new places and tries new ideas that actually feel poignant and impactful to its characters and story. Let’s dive in!

What’s the story about: Past Loki finds himself out of time itself as a prisoner to an authority that needs his help. Will the God of Mischief continue as he always has or decide an alternative route?

Looking back, the main reason this show intrigues from the getgo is by tearing down everything we know about the Marvel universe and telling an equally compelling character-study of Loki himself. While the ways that this show initially tears the Marvel universe apart comes across as a little trolly, (similar to The Mandarin twist, Ragnarok’s treatment of the previous Thor movies, and the backstory of Nick Fury’s eye) we then see that it serves a purpose in expanding the MCU in an extremely unknown realm for those who have watched everything from the beginning.
