EST10 is an office support recruitment agency headquartered in Sydney with an office in London. Our London-based Talent Acquisition Manager Jenny discusses the five most important things international candidates need to consider before touching down in Sydney.

For many, making the move to Sydney is a milestone experience. Sydney is renowned for great weather and sunny beaches… what’s not to love!? But for those people seeking employment upon their arrival, there are a few things you should consider while packing your swimsuit and beach towel…

Computer and Internet access : You are here — great, now the hard work starts! If you are seriously looking for work you will hopefully have a laptop tucked away in your backpack. While it is possible to search for jobs, navigate a new city and research new companies using your phone, uploading your resume from a mobile is rarely hassle-free. Additionally, most recruitment agencies will require you to complete some skills testing and this often has to be done on a computer. While it is always possible to head to an internet cafe, a reliable internet connection and the quiet of home are most conducive to doing your best on these tests, after all it could be the final piece in your job puzzle.

Mobile phone and Australian phone number : Applying for a job? Enquiring about a flat? Getting your TFN? Everything needs a valid and working phone number! As soon as you have a number don’t forget to add it to your resume — we want to be able to contact you about roles as soon as you have applied. This is especially important if you are on a WHV and seeking temp work as temp roles move very quickly.

Your resume/CV : A good resume takes time to put together, so we advise preparing it before you have even landed. Always make sure you keep a Word copy as different roles may require different versions of your resume and you need to be able to make changes easily. It is also a good idea to keep the formatting simple — your resume might appear differently to everyone who reads it depending on their computer and software and resume full of text boxes, pictures or advanced formatting can quickly look messy, reflecting badly on you. Don’t forget to ask a friend to proof read it for you — it’s hard to spot your own mistakes!

Interview Attire : If you are returning home after a long stint away with all your possessions on a ship in the middle or the ocean or if you are here for a year with nothing but a backpack, the message is the same, arrive prepared! You only get one chance to make a great first impression so we recommend having at least one professional outfit suitable for interviewing with you in your luggage. For women, we recommend a skirt and stockings or pants, with a matching blazer, smart blouse and closed toe shoes. Neat hair and conservative jewelry are also advised. For me, a collared shirt and tie are top of your list, alongside a matching suit and polished shoes. If you are ever concerned about what to wear, please don’t hesitate to ask us; we know our clients well and will have visited their offices so we can always advise.

UK referee details : We conduct reference checking on all of our candidates so it is really helpful to include these details on your Resume. If you have been working overseas the time difference can makes things harder so the sooner we have these details the sooner we can get you working. Almost without exception we will speak to your two most recent employers. If you are able to let them know in advance we will be calling it really helps us to help you.

If you work in Administration/Office Support as an Executive Assistant or Personal Assistant, we’d love to hear from you! Please feel free to get in touch with EST10 Recruitment. Our team of skilled recruitment consultants will work closely with you to find the perfect job based on your skills, previous experience, personality and career goals.
