BPM Some History

Six Sigma appeared on 1986 and God saw that it was good. The Motorola guys created an awareness of 'processes' and their discipline focus on how to minimize the defects to zero. They really want to measure the output of process or activities in term of quality.

Then on 1990 the BPR (Business Process Redesign or Re-engineering) appeared and it was good, teams around the world started to review and redesign their process but eventually this movement faded away for some reasons like:

Concept Misuse: Everything was labeled as BPR

Over Radicalism: Redesign was usually radical and in some cases this didn't have to be like that and an incremental approach was better.

Support Immaturity: The necessary tools and technologies to implement the change were not available on time.

BPM then appeared and the proponents says that it was better cause they raised the visibility of process improvement for many organizations, it uses new and better technology , it has a robust methodology and it's simple.

The true is…

Implementing BPM is not simple, it's complex and difficult. It doesn't need technology to be successful. You should better get your processes right before thinking on implementing BPM.

Reality of BPM

The most important component in any BPM implementation is the manage­ment of organizational change and the associated people (staff) impacts. The engagement of people in the process is CRITICAL and we need leaderships from their managers. You can have the most efficient and redesign process ever but if the people is not supporting it you will have NOTHING. They have to be trained, consulted, listened because if they don't understand the process how do you expect people to take ownership of it.
