Not a secret, absolutely, but I’m not sure it’s something that undergrads are told often enough or in the most helpful ways. For sure I talked to various profs and advisor-type people when I was a senior in college about going to grad school and no one ever said anything to me about cost, or value, or the fact that, if I did get an MA/MFA, I would probably be setting myself up for decades of being in debt.

Maybe as a culture we need to make it clearer: a Master’s isn’t terminal — except possibly to your ability to get a mortgage.
