Not in this case. In this case a simple oxford command makes it worse. Read it each way, as is, with an Oxford comma, and any other combo. The final x and y are a unit here..

“take your knife, pestle & mortar and ingredients” becomes “take your knife, pestle and mortar, and ingredients.” I don’t see how that makes anything “worse.” It looks perfectly clear to me.
