LiFi is the Future, WiFi now Obsolete

One of the things I love most about technology is that it’s ever-changing. Things never stay the same for long, and there’s constantly a need to grow. Remember back in the day when accessing the Internet was called “Surfing the Web” and required a landline? When movies awkwardly depicted hackers as long-haired teens with NES Power Gloves, riding electrical waves of light?
Well, LiFi is here, and technically it does require riding electrical waves of light. International Business Times reports that LiFi, invented at the University of Oxford, will be WiFi’s new successor as it transmits data at 224 GB per second.
Some interesting facts about LiFi:
- To put things in perspective, 18 1.5 GB movies could be downloaded in a second.
- LiFi transmits data via light (hence the name), utilizing LED lightbulbs. It’s better suited for localized areas, as light can’t travel through walls.
Will LiFi be a success? If it is, will Time Warner NYC be able to deliver it at speeds faster than a 56k modem, if at all? Only time will tell.
