It was morning at the circus. Hopeful mothers looked up as storks flew over their heads. Each carries a bundle with a baby animal. Mrs. Jumbo sighed as she watched happy mothers with their children. “Oh dear, I so hope there is a kit for me!” She thought. In the end, a stork with a large bundle flew into Mrs. Jumbo’s car — it was a baby elephant. Mrs Jumbo’s elephant sneezed and flapped his two huge ears. Mrs. Jumbo wanted to call him Jumbo Jr. The other elephants began to giggle. “Dumbo!” One of them said. But Mrs. Jumbo didn’t care what the other elephants thought. She loved her baby, big ears and all that. The next day, a group of boys approached the circus tent.
They laughed at Dumbo and teased him. “Look at his ears!” One of them was crying. Mrs Jumbo was trying to protect her child. She lifted the boy away from Dumbo. “Help! Help!” He cried. The circus attendants came running. Soon Mrs. Jumbo was locked in the prison van. Since then, other elephants have ignored poor Dumbo. They even turned their backs on him. Dumbo felt lonely and heartbroken until Timothy Mouse found him. He liked Dumbo. Dumbo finally has a friend! Timothy wanted to help his new friend. “All we have to do is create an act for you,” Mouse explained.”I’ll make you a star!” Only then did they hear the ringmaster talking. “Do I have an idea!” he exclaimed.
“Great pyramid of pachyderms.” He wanted Dumbo to be the topmost elephant in the pyramid. Star! Finally, the Big Moment Has Arrived. But when Dumbo ran off the diving board, he tripped over his flapping ears! He crashed into the elephants, sending them flying in all directions. Now the elephants were meaner than ever with Dumbo. But the ringmaster had another idea. The next day, Dumbo was given over to clowning. Being a clown upset Dumbo. The other clowns teased him and Dumbo felt more alone than ever. “We’ll go to your mom,” Timothy said to cheer Dumbo up. Dumbo and his mother were happy to see each other.
Mrs. Jumbo stuck her trunk through the bars of the cage and held her son close to her, singing a lullaby. But all too soon it was time for Dumbo to leave. That night, Dumbo dreamed that he was a star flying through the air! The next thing Dumbo and Timothy knew was morning. When they opened their eyes, they saw a group of crows looking at them. They were up in the tree! Timothy and Dumbo wondered how they got there. “Maybe you took off!” one of the crows joked. “Yes, this is it!” Timothy exclaimed.
“Dumbo, you flew! Your ears are perfect wings!” The little elephant was surprised. He couldn’t actually fly — could he? Timothy told Dumbo to believe in himself. One of the crows gave Timothy an ordinary feather and whispered, “Use a magic feather!” Holding a feather in his trunk, Dumbo took off from the edge of the cliff — he flew! That night at the circus, Dumbo stood on the roof of the building. He felt no fear. Now that he had the magic feather, he knew he could fly down safely. “Good,” he said. “Day off!” As soon as the baby elephant jumped into the air, he dropped his feather, and Dumbo began to fall. “Open those ears!” Timothy was crying.
“You can fly! You can!” Dumbo took a deep breath and started flapping his ears as fast as he could. Suddenly, Dumbo flew off. He didn’t need that pen at all! The head of the arena was amazed! He watched Dumbo fly out of the building and streak past the cheering crowd. Dumbo was a star! Soon Dumbo became famous all over the world, just like Timothy promised! Crowds flocked to the circus to watch Dumbo the Amazing Flying Elephant. The ringmaster freed Dumbo’s mother and gave her her own special carriage. And Dumbo and his mother were very happy.
