We recently conducted an investigation following a tip from one of our FUEL contributors. The company discovered that this contributor had been a victim of a MyEtherWallet phishing scam giving away control of his wallet private keys.

Our developer traced the corresponding transaction hash, which showed that the phisher created addresses for the purposes of washing the FUEL, then moved it to be traded on the Etherdelta exchange.

Below you will find the record links:

The original contributor’s address: 0x5d77f9ceed4bd8f75e442fed921bb9c4d73f04ec.

The transaction hash where the theft occurred: https://etherscan.io/tx/0xd4dedcf11ab9db12803a7da2e337664a7aa51166805fa218625c6d7e2e8a594b

We would like to remind the community to take a few precautions in order to prevent falling prey to phishing attacks of this nature:

  • Always triple check that the domain name/address is spelled correctly.
  • Type out the official website address rather than following a link, or use a Chrome extension, like the official MyEtherWallet.
  • Avoid clicking on or accepting unsolicited links from individuals on public channels or on unofficial company newsletters.
  • If unsure, verify the link is on a public forum.
  • If you think you have been affected, report the url to Google and on the company’s official Slack channel immediately.
