If the 1960s felt like living in a novel, our own world feels like living in a computer game of the role playing variety. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are no more than computer games. We play these sites to garner ‘likes’ and ‘thumbs up’ that take us to the next level of social status. And the characters we build there are no more real than Mario or Zelda.
Indeed, we celebrate self-contemplation as a virtue. It is not. Self-examination and self-knowledge are virtues. And those have a different quality to self-contemplation. They are about burning away bullshit, whereas self-contemplation is about building an overcoat of bullshit.
