War kills. War destroys. War leave scars in the humanity. But war may inspire too. I’m not saying war is a good thing. I’m saying that war can make men criticize it’s attitudes about war. And this was what happened with the Manic Street Preachers and their most popular music, If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next.
The Preachers are a Wales’ band formed in 1986 by James Dean Bradfield on guitar / vocal, Nick Wire on bass / vocal and Sean Moore on drums. They’ve released, until 2014, 12 albums.
Our history begins in July, 17th, 1936, when the Republican and the Nationalist Armys clashed ’til 1939, when the Nationalist Army won and ascended to the government General Francisco Franco, establishing a fascist regime that lasted ’til 1973. What interest to us here is a poster that the Republican Army released during the war, to alert the world about the atrocities that the Nationalist Army was committing against the Spanish people. Manic Street Preachers have always been politically and socially engaged, and this poster inspired then to compose them most popular song. The lyrics are full of references to the conflict and the low sentence of this poster named the song.
