OK, a few questions and comments.

First, there's a category you seem to be neglecting that in my own task management system I place on the same level as Projects. I call them “practices”. They're narrower than an “Area of Responsibility”; like Projects they are a source of tasks for my daily to-do lists, but they have no final goal to be checked off. They may include specific health maintenance habits like weight training or running or meditation, or keeping current with scholarly literature in a field, or practicing a musical instrument or similar skill. For practical purposes learning a language fits into this category, since it can take years and there's no well-defined point where I can say “OK, I'm fluent now” and be finished, although hopefully I'll eventually reach a level of proficiency such that it no longer requires an active commitment. Based on what you've written here it seems you'd classify them as “hobbies”, but they entail a degree of commitment that you don't seem to be acknowledging when you mention those.

Second, I'm not quite sure whether you regard these four levels as a hierarchy or not. You do say that Projects fall within Areas, but do Areas necessarily fall within or under Resources/topics? Unless they're just the subset of topics that you're currently actively doing something about? You also say “the Resources stack is where 'research' lives” — but if you're actively researching a topic, why doesn't that make it an Area? What's the distinction exactly, either conceptually or pragmatically?

Third, what do you mean when you say an Area entails a “standard to be maintained”?
