Eyes, often referred to as the windows to the soul, possess an uncanny ability to convey myriads of emotions. Think Nora Aunor, the Filipina actress renowned for her illustrious career and a multitude of awards garnered, all thanks to the captivating expressiveness of her eyes. Indeed, they are not just organs for sight but also powerful symbols of ancient archetypes, interpersonal connection and human psychology. In the realm of symbology, eyes play a dual role, representing both paranoia and loving regard, creating a fascinating yin and yang of opposing emotions.

Myth of the Illuminati

The ‘All-Seeing Eye-in-the-Sky’ symbol, frequently depicted as an eye within a pyramid, is associated with control due to its historical connections with secret societies, Masonic loges and the idea of surveillance. It’s often interpreted as a representation of an omnipresent authority, watching and manipulating its citizens in a dystopian — and usually apocalyptic — environment. In any case, the idea that the Illuminati secretly control everything (i.e. manufacturing carcinogenic toothpaste) is about as real as Bigfoot playing poker with the Loch Ness monster in the Bermuda Triangle.

The Eye of Providence is sometimes interpreted by conspiracy theorists as the All-Seeing Eye that hints of the ambitions of a powerful elite seeking to surveil and manipulate mainstream society. The notion of an All-Knowing authority can raise fears about privacy and loss of personal freedoms. Les yeux sans visage.

Superpower or Pandora’s box

The potential abuse of control in the context of evolving social dominance may extend to collective greed, corruption, prejudices and sweeping “get real” statements whose intention is only to further marginalize, alienate and dismiss.

The symbolism of the All-Seeing Eye reflects, for example, the subversive, chaos tactics of covert control freaks enslaved by viral paranoia. In this case, news about a Frankensars from a 2015 article sparked a debate that more than likely equipped them with some conspiratorial strategies to stay ten steps ahead of the game. Alternatively, someone simply may have said “F* it let everything burn” but actually proceeded to do something about it.

Where is the middle ground between control and individual rights, considering the influence and financial resources of formidable figures within the realm of extremist populism? Was the smoking gun held by radicalized netizenry devoid of any political platform but its own hyper-reactivity?

Tales from the dark side of paranoia

The feeling of being watched can send shivers down one’s spine while triggering terror and panic. The eye, in this context, becomes a symbol of absolute evil, paranoia, and control. The idea that your every move is being assessed or reviled can ignite an unsettling sense of damnation and self-hatred.

Throughout literature, film and art, we find instances where the eye takes on an ominous role. Stories of wicked voyeurs, clandestine conspirators, and the ever-watchful Marquis De Sade permeating our nightmares. The evil eye represents insane fear and fright of being constantly monitored then eventually tortured to death (following a horrific medical procedure, of course). The eye, representing evil surveillance, nihilistic cruelty and the loss of privacy, becomes a diabolical prayer or self-fulfilling curse that will inevitably manifest new Orwellian hellscapes.

The only solution now, in the throes of your harrowing delirium, involves being appointed Christ-figure: instead of a thousand years of peace, you are again tortured to death for the Nth time.

All is full of love

On the flip side, eyes are also a powerful symbol of affection, love, and connection. Think of a cat’s loving regard, the way it stares at you with slow blinks, exuding warmth and trust. These tender glances from our furry BFFs are a clear sign of their affection, a silent “I appreciate you” conveyed through their eyes sans the Stockholm Syndrome (I believe).

Human relationships are no different. When someone looks at us with almost teary eyes of happiness, it communicates tenderness, understanding or instant reconciliation. The eyes become a vessel for empathy, connection, forgiveness, freedom! The old saying that “actions speak louder than words” holds true here. Through a simple look, we can metta understanding, compassion, “care-bear-stare”. Metta here is a deep, courageous loving kindness, an eye-thou bridge between souls.

Eye contact is foundational. When we engage in meaningful eye contact, it establishes a sense of intimacy, trust, and emotional resonance. It’s the reason why we often find ourselves drawn to the eyes of our loved ones, feeling a sense of security and affection in their presence. Why settle on focussing at the space between the eyebrows of the person you’re talking to? We are worthy of love, worthy to love. Remember that shifty eyes create an impression of deceit or suspicion.

Real strength is found in loving those you see as enemies, going beyond mere toughness.

Last night during a meditation class, I had a vision like a vector animation in which orbs of white light coalesced into the shape of an eye, emerging against the black canvas of my closed eyelids. What’s intriguing is that others in the class reported seeing variations of this such as purple circles and pairs of eyes in flight.

Our meditation teacher interpreted these visions as cherubim or a divine presence. While some felt a kind of fear or apprehension, personally, I believed these symbols were a manifestation of holy presence and higher, benevolent energies. It was as if, much like the affectionate stare of cats, these eyes were gazing at me with loving kindness.

Windows of Paradox

The paradox of eyes, serving as symbols of both paranoia and loving regard, illumines intricate patterns of reactivity and deep feeling. In society, we find ourselves viewed from diverse angles: painted into a corner, spitefully othered, marginalized and strange, alienated, objectified; yet on a brighter note, celebrated for our achieved aspirations, or regarded simply and with profound tenderness. Our eyes can either soothe or unsettle. While we desire admiration, we also protect ourselves from suspicious or biased stares. Le champ-contrechamp.

The duality underscores the depth of human connection and vulnerability. It serves as a reminder of the pervasive swell and tide of politics that overwhelm and surround us, urging us to remain vigilant about our own thought patterns and individuality. It reminds us of the importance of understanding one another. Whether we find ourselves on the giving or receiving end, we are reminded of our shared humanity, our need for love and security, and our innate capacity to create meaningful connections through the enigmatic language of the eyes (that includes our beloved cats, I suppose).
