Our Next Product

Hey everyone, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and comments with us. I really enjoyed reading them, and it was awesome to hear some of your stories. Some comments that were particularly nice for us to read:

Love supporting small company innovation that fulfills an unmet need very effectively! I’d love to see behind the scenes with product design/brainstorming and production.
I have gotten compliments from cars- they actually stop and tell me how they love my visibility. A local police officer stopped to tell me how awesome my helmet was.
I was part of the Kickstarter clan and loved your updates. I backed a project after yours (for a winter coat) and compared to my experience with you, it was a nightmare. The open and honest communication you gave your backers made all the difference. It was easy to discern that you were genuine and desired to turn out a quality product we all could be proud of.

Thank you for the kind words. We’ll do our best to live up to it. :)

We asked you guys what kind of things you might be interested in hearing about from us. We got lots of great answers to that question. Here are a few comments that I think are representative of some broader sentiments from the group as a whole:

I would like to see what new features you are planning to add to the helmet. I also would love to see what issues other users have with the helmet and how you are working to resolve and improve on them.
I’m most interested in the technology pathway. For example, the auto tracking feature sounded great, but doesn’t seem to work that well. How did you come up with the idea? Was it conceived from the very beginning? Is the spotty performance fixable?
How do you decide/think about coming up with new features and new products?
I’d be interested in short updates, but particularly if they are the result of feedback, i.e. represent dialog, not just one-way communication. I’m sure others have ideas for how to improve the helmet, and you have reasons why things are or are not a good idea. So facilitating that would be what I would support.

I have to tell you guys — This may seem trivial to you, but it is SO GREAT to be able to hear directly from y’all. You have no idea how helpful your feedback is to us.

Sometimes I fall into this trap of being so close to the problem that I start losing perspective about what the most important issues are, and what are the things that you guys truly care about. It is so awesome to have a community of Lumos riders who care enough about the product that you’re willing to take some time out of your day to share your thoughts with us. I’m really pumped to be writing again!

As a short, preliminary answer to some of those questions — Thank you for taking the time to pen your thoughts. These are all things that we plan on addressing, and that I plan on writing about. I won’t be able to write about everything all at once, but know that all the issues that you guys raise to us are indeed things that we are working on to improve and fix. We’re not ignoring the problems. We’ve got some fixes in the works, and I’m excited to be sharing details about them with you soon.

As For New Features/New Products..

How do we decide/think about coming up with new features and new products? Here is how we think about it:

We start with ourselves, the people in the Lumos Team. What product do we want to build, and wish we could have for ourselves? We use that as a starting point, and make something that we feel excited about using for ourselves. That’s Part One.

Part Two is we then share it with our community and the world, and see if they share that same excitement about the product as we do. We get their feedback, and use it to make something even more awesome.

That was our playbook for our first product, and we’re doing the same for our second one, and hopefully many more products to come.

This new product is called the Lumos Street. We’ve been working on it for some time now. We’re pretty excited about it, and we think it is ready for Part Two of our process, which is where you guys come in.
