Big Stories Matter

“A very exciting new journalism project… There are thousands of amazing stories in science and technology; I can’t wait for Matter to start uncovering them.” - Felix Salmon

A little over a year ago, I stumbled across this really interesting Kickstarter campaign. It was called MATTER — a new publication pursuing a new model to support long-form, investigative journalism in the areas of science and technology. As they put it on their campaign page:

The web is the future of journalism, but let's be honest: the future isn’t living up to expectations. Newspapers and magazines have cut back on in-depth reporting. Gossip sites have proliferated. The web has become a byword for fast and cheap. Why isn’t it synonymous with fearless, investigative and enthralling writing?
We think it can be.
We’ve developed a way to support independent, global, in-depth reporting about science and technology, two subjects that are close to our hearts. We’re going to use it to build MATTER, the new home for the best journalism about the future. And we need you to help us make it happen.

That is a cause I could get behind, so I signed up as a backer. A few months later, one of the founders, Jim Giles, sent me a really nice note asking if I’d like to get an update on the project in person. Though his partner was “across the pond,” as those Brits say, Jim happened to have an office about a block away from Obvious HQ in downtown San Francisco. I took him up on the meeting and was impressed with the vision and dedication to their mission that Jim expressed.

A few months later, I proposed that MATTER and Medium join forces. The reason: I knew we were aligned in our mission, and I thought we’d be stronger together. I wanted them to continue what they were doing — publishing great articles and defining a new model to support investigative journalism. (And I knew that cracking that second part would have huge implications.) In addition, they could use Medium to add new dimensions to what they do.

Jim and Bobbie weren’t easy to convince; they were dedicated to a mission and wanted to make sure they could still pursue that. Eventually we reached a deal, and I’m thrilled that MATTER is now part of Medium and Jim and Bobbie are on our team. They’ll continue to develop MATTER — both the content and the mechanisms for supporting long-form writing. And they’ll have more room to experiment with both, as well as helping the editorial group here at Medium.
