I think the word does limit audience appeal mostly because it’s obscure and geeky — to the uninitiated “subscribe to podcast feed” might as well be “install ethernet card” — but I don’t think a terminology shift alone will change listeners’ willingness to pay.

I don’t think the word is a long-term issue, either in popularity or $$. Geeky has a way of becoming #nongeeky. As long as the actual process of finding great podcasts — and paying for them — does not require jumping through hoops, I think people will do so.
