The best free font is also the worst free font.

We’ve finally come to a point, I believe, where the use of the font Comic Sans is widely mocked by both designers and non-designers, and it’s a beautiful thing. For the most part, designers no longer have to live in fear of being surrounded by businesses using the worst font in history, though at the cost of everyone wanting to make Comic Sans jokes to you once they find out you are a designer.

And for those more savvy, you may have moved up to making fun of Papyrus. Same thing as with Comic Sans.

Now, what if I told you there was a new bad font in town?
I can hear you now, “A font worse than Comic Sans? Pfft. I scoff at you”.
May I present to you, Lobster:

Look at it. Gaze into it’s uninspiring abyss. Feel all hope drain from you-
Wait…thats a pretty attractive font, right?
Yes it is, it’s well made, and comes with everything you’d want and need in a font, and its free!

What makes this font so terrible?

It’s. Used. In. God. Damn. Everything.

I swear to you, I have seen it used in pretty much every small/local business here in Omaha, I’ve seen it used on Goodwill billboards, I’ve seen it used in McDonalds ads, I’ve seen it used in a cheap sticker on the side of someone’s truck for there lawn mowing business. Goddamn Applebee’s even.

Is nothing sacred anymore?

What makes this worse, is that more often than not, it is an actual, paid designer doing this shit. It’s embarrassing. It’s not only bad design, but lazy as all hell. It’s “hey I need a cool scripty font to use to appeal to the younger hipster culture, how about Lobster? That looks like some Pinterest shit.”
Word of advice, if it looks like some Pinterest shit, you’re better off going in a different direction.

The thing about Comic Sans and *shudder* Papyrus, is that when people use those (people who aren’t designers) it’s really not all that bad of a thing.
You see, it shows that people actually take things like typography and font usage into consideration. It’s the first step on the right path.
This video does a good job of explaining it. There’s a certain appreciation you have to have for Comic Sans, no matter how ugly it is.

Lobster, on the other hand, does not get that excuse. This is a font used by designers. People who’s job it is to know better. It’s straight up lazy design. It is a plague. It’s overused garbage. It does not belong on fucking everything. It’s the easy way out of actually designing something. And its a shame, because it is a really nice looking font.

This is just my angry font rant, but hopefully you can take something from it. And now whenever you see something designed with Lobster, you can impress all your friends with your superior font know-how.
“Lobster!” you’ll scoff while sitting with your friends at Applebee’s, as you kick back another stawberry-lime margarita “Can you believe they used Lobster on this menu??” And they will all applaud your wisdom! I promise!
