I actually think this verse is about snakes. It appears to be an etiological text that explains why there snakes act the way they do, crawling on bellies and striking at people's heels.

Paul definitely interpreted the serpent as Satan and spoke about sin in his interpretation, but all of these deeper meanings seem like they are foreign to the original text.

That being said, I think this article was very well-written and I am glad this topic is being discussed. This kind of insider/outsider language about the world is not very good for everyone's mental health. Church can be a place where people are given carte blanche to judge the moral decisions of others.
