It also helps to have the other crew members assist in situational awareness. As a navigator with the USAF, I always tried to be aware of any factors that did not seem to be correct, mainly because I would buy the farm aprox 0.1 seconds after the pilots. I had an agreement with the pilots that this would be an exception to the rule of STFU on approach. Just another case of using any and all resources available to keep the streak of takeoffs and landings numerically equal.
