The digital age has turned us into content consuming zombies. From social media to a never ending supply of news, video clips, podcasts, and games, it’s hard not to get consumed by content overload. Today’s common remedy for a digital detox is simply to unplug. Retreat into nature, practice yoga, meditate, talk to a shrink, read a book (physical copy). Haven’t you read the countless articles of Silicon Valley tech workers burning out and ditching 6+ figure jobs to travel the world and find purpose in their lives? What’s the underlying reason of their inability to be happy?

Help my GPS isn’t working!

Detoxing from the digital is necessary. We do it daily, but it’s important we do it with purpose. I’ve had countless conversations with my peers (millennials) both personally and professionally about their desire to change jobs, career paths, take up a new hobby or learn a skill — only to find them in a similarly desirable and envious position a year or more later. I’ve even fallen circumstance to this myself. Technology has given us vision opthamologists couldn’t imagine possible. We see our colleagues getting promoted, friends eating extravagant 5-star meals, people getting married, strangers enjoying once in a lifetime vacations, job opportunities floating in the ether — all calling out, why not me? Instead of questioning why not me, start creating this life for yourself.

Happiness is not a state of being that just is, we must create it over and over. In a society where the term “creative” translates to someone with artistic aptitude — a designer, musician, writer, actor, artist — it’s easy to understand why so many of us don’t call ourselves creatives and believe it. The way we start truly being happy is to challenge the status quo and to start believing in ourselves and our creative potential. We must create to survive and survival is core to our nature as humans. So, detox away, embrace mindfulness and being present, change jobs and take up new hobbies — but also try to create something new everyday. Turn your content consumption to production ratio from zero-to-one and then see if your happy.
