Contemplation isn’t for sissies

You might have a distorted definition

After getting dressed this morning to take my son to school, still chewing the last piece of toast and reviewing in my mind my schedule for the day, I was closing the terrace doors in my bedroom when I almost missed it (again):

The promise behind those doors

Even behind the peaceful lake, the clear blue sky, the mountain so close, the city lights so far in the distance and the trees framing the image as if it was a Van Gogh painting.

The promise behind those doors was one of the main reasons why my best friend/husband/partner/adventurer’s companion and I said “yes” to this house. And I admit we’ve been forgetting too often to say yes again.

But this morning, the promise pulled me strongly into its unseen world, and reminded me of its existence.

The promise behind those doors was…

The opportunity for contemplation.

Not only the opportunity to «see» a beautiful scenery, but to really give ourselves to the practice of contemplation. Whenever. Wherever.

Swami Krishnananda wrote:

To Plato, love of truth is aroused by the contemplation of the beautiful ideas. Contemplation of beauty is the way to the contemplation of Truth.
Statue The Spirit of Contemplation by Albert Toft.

Plato thought that through contemplation, the soul may ascend to knowledge of the Form of the Good or other divine Forms.

To contemplate goes way—way— beyond “seeing” something for a while.

That’s staring, but not contemplate.

Contemplation is a profound, powerful, sacred act.

And as Bashar, one of my dearest teachers taught me: «The greatest power requires the lightest touch»

As I have experienced it, contemplation implies to forget/ignore/abandon who you believe you are… stop being the observer, loose yourself in the moment, and let yourself be the object of your observation.

Become one with it. Become IT.

To do that requires balls. Or ovaries, according to the case.

So next time you think that contemplation is for sissies, a hippie thing, or a waste of time, try it first. Really give yourself to the experience.

Try to be that powerful, while doing nothing but being.

No, contemplation isn’t for sissies.

Contemplation, is for Jedi Masters.
