Somewhere in our history, we had a labor movement, but wound up having a lot of cultural antipathy for actual labor. I see it everywhere: you’re supposed to be good at something without working at it. You’re supposed to remember who designed the car, not who built it. You’re supposed to be the idea guy, not the ditchdigger.
But everything is work. The worst trope in our stories is knowing how to do stuff without learning or work. And even if the work is acknowledged in the story, it gets fed into a palatable montage. Maybe we need to spend more time watching people fall and get up again.
