Places to Visit in Erfurt

The ancient city of Erfurt is a vibrant mix of old and new. The capital city of the German state of Thuringia has been party to several historical events. It has been also been a part of the lives of various esteemed figures throughout history.

Present-day Erfurt has quite a lot to offer as well. Whether you’re looking to submerge yourself in history, culture, entertainment, or the arts, this multi-towered city has it all.

Here are a few of Erfurt’s star attractions.

St. Augustine’s Monastery

Founded in the 13th Century, St. Augustine’s Monastery has witnessed quite a bit in the centuries gone by, but what it is known for the most is the presence of the reformer Martin Luther. This was where Luther became a monk in the early 16th Century. The part of the monastery where he spent about six years of his life is now open to tourists as an exhibit. The monastery premises itself are vast and its old-world beauty attracts people from all over the world.

Old Synagogue

One of Erfurt as well as Germany’s oldest attractions, the Old Synagogue is a fraction of the medieval ages. Having been through multiple eras of Jewish oppression, the Synagogue is still intact and retains most of its original features. It sits among the architectural masterpieces of Erfurt and has been preserved very carefully throughout history. Similar to the St. Augustine’s Monastery, this too was suggested to be made a World Heritage Site.

Galli Theater e.V.

As much as large establishments and historical landmarks are important to Erfurt, this city wouldn’t be what it is today without businesses like this theater. This place not only puts up shows but has also taken on the responsibility of educating its patrons. Its content is targeted towards young learners, with a healthy mix of humorous and emotional shows. The theater also has a reading section where there are several books for its target audience.

Angermuseum

When compared to some of the historical structures on this list, the Angermuseum might seem quite modern to you. It was established as recently as the 19th Century. It began by occupying a single floor in a building where merchants went to weigh their wares before paying their custom taxes. It slowly took up the entire building to become what it is today. One of the primary museums of Erfurt, it is known to house a wide range of artifacts. Everything from medieval art to paintings to glass art can be found at Angermuseum.

Ilvers

Ilvers is an integral part of the party scene in Erfurt. It offers the best of nightlife events such as sports screenings, live music gigs, karaoke, and much more. With an impressive menu and classy interiors, Ilvers is the place to be if you are looking to party.

Anger

Erfurt is a go-to destination for shopping and Anger could definitely be considered as its shopping capital. Centuries ago, Anger was the destination of merchants and traders who sold wares such as wine and wheat. It comes as no surprise that it is now the “it” place for locals as well as tourists looking to shop. It offers everything from groceries to art.
