I work in IT and can’t code for love or money
My take on the technical Scrum Master debate.
I work in software development and can’t code for toffee. I believe in honing in on my strengths and trusting those around me to use theirs to deliver value. Since entering the world of IT I have learnt a lot, and my technical knowledge is improving.
It’s had to.
Could I learn how to code? Yes. However, I would rather spend the hours the above would take helping those around me and serving them in the best possible way.
Has my high level technical knowledge been a blocker at times? Yes There have been times when a greater technical knowledge would have helped navigate a situation. These times have been few and far between.
This is just my own point of view, everyone is different, one of joys of being a Scrum Master.
During the times of self doubt I look back on the 17 year old version of myself, what did I know about being in the navy back then? Nothing, a few years later I was leading teams in all sorts of environments. I knew my strengths, I knew the team’s strengths, and together we did some great things. Instead of focusing on the negatives of a non technical individual, why not focus on their strengths?
I knew my strengths, I knew the team’s strengths, and together we did some great things.
