Each piece is designed to be bite-sized and read in 5 to 10 minutes for easy consumption. This guide is a work-in-progress — please leave any questions or comments you have so that we can continue to improve our content!

Why crypto? Why blockchain?

Some of the biggest companies in the world are investing in and building infrastructure in crypto and blockchain:

  • Facebook / Whatsapp: social media cryptocurrency (link)
  • JPMorgan: private blockchain payment system (link)
  • Alibaba: blockchain supply chain solution(link)
  • IBM: blockchain cloud services (link)
  • Fidelity: Bitcoin custodial services (link)

These firms believe that blockchain and crypto offer creative new alternatives and business models with benefits which outweigh those of existing processes. It’s as if blockchain is the miracle cure to any problem in the world!

This, of course, isn’t true. We are constantly bombarded with news and claims about blockchain which can be very misleading. At EVG, we believe that it is of paramount importance for each individual to have a fundamental understanding of the principles and technologies underpinning the digital asset movement to understand what cryptocurrencies and blockchains can or cannot do.

In the course of our work, we found that most explanations of Bitcoin swung to two extremes: They either glossed over important details, misrepresenting them, or were too technical for lay readers. We believe that it is possible to find a middle ground without sacrificing too much on the technical details.

Our goal is to distill the essence of Bitcoin and blockchain to provide our readers with a comprehensive understanding of the basic mechanisms and incentives in crypto that can serve as their foundation in navigating this new world. Bitcoin was created to empower individuals. In the same spirit, we hope that our guide can empower you to form your own opinions in this space.
