This piece is related to an article I posted last month on Long Beach’s success with oil. See The Gift That Keeps On Giving. This article and more to follow dives into the oil production players that have a foothold on our great City of Long Beach.

Introduction

From 1911 through 1935, the State of California granted the City of Long Beach all of the tidelands within its city limits. This extensive area includes the stretch from the mean high tide line to three miles offshore. The State bestowed these tidelands to the City under a trust agreement, entrusting them with the responsibility of developing and utilizing the properties for the benefit of commerce, navigation, fisheries, and recreation.

The grant of tidelands to the City of Long Beach was a significant step in the region’s history. It provided the City with valuable coastal resources and presented opportunities for economic growth and development. The trust established by the State emphasized the importance of responsible stewardship and utilization of these lands to serve the interests of the community.

Under the terms of the trust, the City of Long Beach became the custodian of the tidelands. The City was tasked with managing and overseeing the utilization of these properties while ensuring that they remained accessible and beneficial to the public. The specific purposes outlined in the trust agreement included fostering commerce and trade, facilitating navigation and shipping, promoting fishing and related industries, and providing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

The trust grant had a profound impact on the development of Long Beach. Over the years, the City worked diligently to leverage the potential of the tidelands for economic prosperity and community enrichment. The construction of port facilities, such as the Port of Long Beach, transformed the region into a major hub for international trade and shipping. The City also invested in the development of recreational areas, including parks, beaches, and waterfront attractions, which have become popular destinations for locals and tourists alike.

The management of the tidelands involved collaboration between the City, state agencies, and other stakeholders. Various regulatory and oversight mechanisms were established to ensure that the utilization of these lands adhered to environmental, legal, and public interest considerations. This cooperative approach aimed to strike a balance between economic development and environmental preservation, safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the tidelands.

Long Beach, California, is known for its vibrant coastal lifestyle and bustling port, is also home to Tidelands Oil & Gas Corporation. This dynamic company specializes in the development and operation of transportation and storage infrastructure for natural gas. With a strong commitment to sustainability and technological innovation, Tidelands Oil & Gas Corporation has become a key player in the energy sector, supporting the growth of natural gas usage in the region and beyond.

Today, the City of Long Beach continues to fulfill its responsibilities as the trustee of the tidelands. The ongoing management and development of these properties reflect the City’s commitment to promoting commerce, navigation, fisheries, and recreation in a manner that aligns with contemporary environmental standards and community needs. By leveraging the unique coastal resources at its disposal, the City strives to maintain a vibrant and thriving coastal city that benefits both its residents and the broader region.
