PelotonU is the Austin Non-Profit Helping Everyone Get Degrees, No Matter What
Navigating college is difficult and expensive…what if there is a better way to earn a degree? With PelotonU, now there is.
What started in a Burger King parking lot five years ago with a meeting with a prospective student and his father is soon to be enrolling it’s 100th student, offering each of them a better chance at a college degree and thus, a better chance at life.
What is PelotonU?
PelotonU is personalized non-profit program designed to help working students graduate from college on their time, their way.
Here’s how it works:
1. Students take one class at a time.
PelotonU is tailored for working students, which means time is a premium, so you’re only enrolled in one class at a time. This means you’re not worrying about juggling multiple deadlines, but rather, laser-focused on school around your busy schedule.
2. Students graduate faster.
Laser-focused = speed, which is good because working students are super busy. This means you can fly through classes. On average, PelotonU students graduate with an Associate’s degree in 9–12 months and a Bachelor’s degree in 2–3 years. Curious what degrees are offered? Check out the list here.
3. Students pay affordable tuition.
Faster classes means spending less money on school. The cost of college through PelotonU is $5,500/year without any hidden costs or fees. Over 70% of our students cover this full cost with their Pell Grant, costing them nothing to join our program. i.e. — you get degrees without the debt.
4. And they get valuable community.
Going to school online can be hard. PelotonU knows that, so they’ve built a support system of other full-time working-students, offices to study in, and mentors to provide guidance, accountability, and tutoring when you need it most.
“Traditional university is hard and very time consuming, and from experience I know that keeping a full time job and going to school full time is very, very difficult. PelotonU knows that fact and found a way to work around it, making it so that it really is all around your schedule.”
-Connor, a PelotonU graduate
Why is PelotonU important?
Current data suggests that, of all 50 states, Texas ranks 32nd in college completion amongst 2-year and 4-year public universities (49% graduate in at least 6 years). Amongst working or part-time students, this rate is a staggeringly low 16%, meaning that less than 1 in 5 working-students that enroll in college will actually finish.
And this is a huge problem for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the gross income inequality that’s created and the economic losses that occur. Some estimates indicate that Texas loses as much as $430 million annually due to high dropout rates.
However, that hardly compares to the personal impact non-completion can have on working-students and their families. Take Adry, for example. She’s a full-time employee, a full-time Mom to an awesome kid, and, before PelotonU, she held no college degrees.
Now she’s working on her second.
Like all of us, her education means greater confidence, greater salaries at work, and greater opportunities for her family moving forward. This is why PelotonU is important.
Because it means any student, under any circumstances, can do it their way. They can do it faster, smarter, and with the flexibility and support they deserve. So here’s to PelotonU.
Thank you for all you do.
