OVERVIEW

Podcasting has been around for almost 20 years. The basics of the technology surrounding it haven’t really changed much in that time.

You have an audio file, which is usually an mp3 file, and you have an RSS feed which is an XML file with information about all the episodes of the podcast.

Despite the consistent growth of podcasting over the last two decades, there hasn’t been a commensurate amount of innovation in the space.

Many podcasters and podcast companies have been happy to allow large companies like Apple and Spotify to take the lead and define standards for the podcast industry.

What is Podcasting 2.0?

Podcasting 2.0 is an umbrella term that covers a collection of initiatives to advance podcasting technology and to decentralize podcasting, taking control of the medium out of the hands of large technology companies.

These projects are all open source.

Who Is Behind Podcasting 2.0?

While many of the individual projects under the Podcasting 2.0 umbrella are open source and decentralized, the main figures behind the movement have been Adam Curry and Dave Jones.
