Hi Omar. The problem of our current govt, recent govts and the two major parties is both appalling and depressing in equal measure. I will contest one aspect of your piece however, and point out that it’s unhelpful to lump all Australians into a basket of “white supremacists”. The failure of govts to be undone by such inhumane behaviour does not reflect a nation of people united behind their policies. It is more nuanced than that. Democracy means that many people who want to vote for compassion (and intelligence) do not always have their voices heard. Is it 5% of Australia who want to see refugees treated with kindness instead of torture? Is it 25%? I don’t know. It’s obviously less than 50% if the last election is anything to go by, but that doesn’t mean it’s 0%. I support those people who express the view that “we are better than this”, whether that is a cry for hope or a comment on the minority. Your wish for justice and basic human decency is noble, and you are not alone in this desire.
