Quitting Facebook: the right way

Fighting Facebook is my hobby, work and life. I was working at Telegram, was affiliated with VK (russian FB), created several social startups (mostly messengers) and i learned that there is the only way to quit any social product that can really damage it— constantly promoting alternative platforms within your network of friends and coworkers.

Frankly everyone think that to “vote with a wallet” you have to just delete an account, but in reality it is an equivalent of not voting —bad actors will only benefit of this. You have to move your network. If you and your friends start to move somewhere you will create a trend that will kill facebook quite fast. This is their biggest nightmare, that’s why they are buying all top apps, trying to kill the one that they could not get, etc.

All metrics shows that to make new social product work for you you have to reach very low bar: just have few your close friends there. That’s it — just 3–5 close friends and coworkers and it will work for you forever. This small amount of friends actually creates a trend that will bring most of your network there too. This is what a social product as a company have to reach too — to make their users invite few friends.

Of course having such trend will help a company to raise more money, speed up marketing and reach more and more people and eventually FB will became Myspace.

All this starts from you and some of your friends. Find a cozy place and move there. You will like it, i have seen this many times in last decade.
