A bill of lading (BOL, also called a Waybill) is a legal document between the shipping carrier and the business which acts as a proof of contract of carriage, a receipt of goods, and a document of title of goods. According to Business Dictionary, a bill of lading is “required in all claims for compensation for any damage, delay, or loss; and for the resolution of disputes regarding ownership of the cargo”.

As such, it is considered as one of the most important documents in the whole shipping and freight process. A bill of landing also has many types, depending on the purpose and set of specific instructions that is to be relayed to the shipping carrier.
