The difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament God — Part 1

Brace yourself! This is more of a teaching blog than an entertaining one. It may not be an easy read because there is more here than a normal, well adjusted person would normally want to know but it will be worth it. It is the detail which makes me a boring person that brings the Bible alive for me.

[NOTE: Important words analysed below are identified with Hebrew/Greek transliterations into English and Strong’s Numbers so that whoever wants to can check them out — it is strongly recommended that you do. I use the Blue Letter Bible (https://www.blueletterbible.org/ )]

This is a five part series.

This Part 1 demonstrates, using simple Hebrew spelling and etymology that, at the Burning Bush, Moses was speaking to the God of the Old and New Testament, Who is one-and-the-same Person.

Part 2 will use the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Bible to confirm that the OT Yehovah and NT Yeshua/Jesus is one-and-the-same-Person.

Part 3 will use the Scriptures from both Testaments to show that the tasks completed by Yehovah, Christ and the Holy Spirit confirmed that the OT Yehovah and NT Yeshua/Jesus is one-and-the-same-Person.

Part 4, will examine why NT Saints have such a low regard for the loving kindness and mercy of the OT Yehovah and present a remedy for anyone interested enough to take it up.

Part 5, will examine the evidence provided in the Scriptures to give a different perspective as to the type of relationship the Christ desires with His Church.

Introduction.

Inclusiveness and tolerance have become the New Gospel. Everyone, especially Atheist, seems to know that, “The New Testament (NT) Jesus is a God of Love,” and incessantly lecture Christians who do not passionately embrace the ‘enlightened morality,’ in order to educate them to become better, less bigoted, human beings. The Old Testament (OT), where the 10 Commandments are written, is on the wrong side of history. Comments like, “I like your Jesus but I don’t think much of his dad,” and “Jesus is cute but Jehovah’s a brute,” abound. It seems that, in the eyes of the World, Christians just don’t understand Christianity because they are confused about which God is in charge. I’m open to correction but, unfortunately, that applies to many well-meaning Christians. Possibly because they are Torah-fied of the Old Testament and are afraid of, “Falling under the Law.” It is high time to sort this confusion out for Christians. If Atheists (or Apathy-ists because we are in Australia) care to follow on that is good, but you are not the focus. My concern is saving the Saved who are stumbling about in the fog.

It is expected that anyone reading this would have a working knowledge of the Bible — OT and NT.

First things first.

It is necessary to go back to the Book of Exodus.

Who was speaking to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:2) ?

He is identified as the Angel of the Lord (Transliterated, mal’āḵ Yahōvâ). We know that it was God because He commanded Moses to remove his shoes because he, Moses, was on Holy Ground. Throughout the whole Bible no mal’āḵ, except, Satan, would allow himself to be worshipped.

[Side note: Throughout the Bible the personal pronouns of all Heavenly Beings are masculine. That is another story for another time but forget all this gender fluidity nonsense.]

The title of the Person seems to be Yehovah but does that tolerate a closer investigation into His Identity?

Unless you are fully convinced that the Holy Spirit holds the Intellectual Rights to the entire Bible because He breathed the words into the human scribes to write it, as Apostle Paul informed Timothy, you may as well leave now. Anyone who approaches the Word of God as being the word of men will not understand it. As Apostle Paul also explains in 1 Corinthians 2:14. Keeping this in mind, the Holy Spirit chooses His words carefully.

Let the spelling do the work.

It is written in Exodus 3:14, And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” [“I AM who I AM,” or “I will be what I will be.”]

I AM who I AM in Hebrew is (remembering Hebrew runs right-to-left) אהיה אשר אהיה

אהיה is spelled phonically, ה (hey) י (yod) ה (hey) (א is silent)

Phonically, the phrase is sounded A’ha’yeh ashoo’er a’ha’yeh

So what?

The Hebrew characters spelling ‘Yehovah’ are called the Tetragrammaton, יהוה, spelled yod-hey-vav-hey.

Apparently, not the name of the Person in the bush. But things are not as they seem. The grammar clears it up.

I AM, hayeh, has the Strong’s Number H1961. It is a verb which is a primitive root meaning ‘exist,’ ‘existence,’ “I exist.”

Yehovah, H3068 is the noun form of the verb H1961. It means, “He exists.” It is a proper name of the one true God — a term of endearment in Hebrew. Meaning roughly, “The Covenant Keeping God Who Comes Down and delights in keeping His Promise.”

The English Name Jesus is derived from Yĕhowshuwa (Yoshua or Yehoshua), H3091 meaning, “Jehovah is salvation.” This is derived from H3068 which is derived in turn from H1961.

So at the Burning Bush Moses was speaking to One Person, the God of both the OT and the NT.

How subtle is the Written Word of the Living Word of God?

The forgoing evidence has not been presented to convince any reader but to allow a personal decision to be made. There is much more to know about this subject. Perhaps you’ll pay another visit, sometime.

All Glory to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
