Review: This book, Herbal Antibiotics, by Mary Jones, covers a short list of 45 “herbal” antibiotics, and suffers from some of the same flaws as her book on antivirals.
This book provides only basic information, but they are not all herbs. Honey is not an herb, nor is cabbage, as just two examples. I was looking for a book that would provide information on natural antibiotics, which it does. But it is not consistent throughout in how it describes various properties, or how it classifies various plants and other remedies. And, ultimately, is rather simplistic. There is also no bibliography or resources section so that you can read more about the claims the author is making. As with the book on antivirals, I would not rely on this one for anything other than a starting point.
Each entry has a brief description in a few short paragraphs which may include some history of its use, its availability, its antibiotic properties (actual compounds or classes of chemical compounds in the plants that give it antibiotic properties) along with its most common medical uses, its collection and preparation, dosage, possible side effects, contraindications, alternatives, and other common uses. I won’t address each of these categories, but do want to share a few thoughts about a couple of them.
First to give credit where it is due, in this book she does a better job of noting in the descriptions other properties of the “herbs” she covers. For example, many of these natural antibiotics also happen to be antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic or otherwise antimicrobial. There may even be a couple with antiparasitic properties. So this book is slightly more helpful in the descriptions. But you still have to pay attention as it may note a medical condition that is viral or fungal in nature (flu or athletes foot) without specifically stating that the natural antibiotic being described also happens to be an antiviral or antifungal. You have to bring a fair amount of medical knowledge with you to use the information in this book.
I did not find notes about “availability” to be helpful. She often only states, “in most good herbal remedy stores,” and almost exclusively recommends iHerb and Amazon for sources. Although there are some other suppliers/sources in the back of the book (akin to ads), these are the sites she refers readers to for practically everything. I don’t find that helpful without more information because there are plenty of purveyors of potions on Amazon and she makes no attempt to suggest reputable brands and only provides a limited number of sources, and those without regard to their geographic region (I’m in the US and wouldn’t likely order anything from the UK, for example; so that suppliers should have been separated in the back of the book by country).
Another area where the book is lacking is “collection and preparation.” Notes for these have little to nothing to do with collection. This is not a source of information for regions of a country to go herb hunting, i.e., the Midwest of the US, or in shady forests or sunny meadows. And, because she is mostly recommending commercial preparations that come in tablet/capsule form, or tincture/extracts, there is little information about actual preparation. There is a section with some recipes in a separate chapter. And the one fault I see with these is that she does not repeat her cautions and contraindications. Some recipes have many ingredients and a repetition of cautions is appropriate to help warn readers of who should not take certain combinations of herbs or other ingredients. There are no cross-references to the recipes or an index to help you find recipes with a particular herb or pages where a particular herb is mentioned as an alternative, all of which would have been useful.
Finally, I found certain ways that ailments are described rather unhelpful. For example, there are many notes of uses for “heart conditions,” “kidney disease” and “skin diseases.” All of those are broad categories of conditions, with different sources (i.e., skin disease can be viral, bacterial, allergic, or even poison, such as poison ivy). Does a particular herb or natural source have properties that will fight just the bacterial origins of such conditions or also other origins of such conditions? Many natural remedies have multiple effects. But she doesn’t distinguish these very well. And she does not provide a glossary where she defines what she means when she uses these (and other) terms.
After studying this author’s two books and a handful of others that have far more comprehensive information, I have decided to create my own spreadsheet collecting natural remedies information. Her books cover antibiotic and antiviral remedies, but neither covers well antifungals. Other books may note all of these and other properties but have no organized lists by property, requiring painstaking collection of information on each of these kinds of properties. Doing my own thing will allow me to have all of the various properties for each one and the type of comprehensiveness for which I am looking, and will be tailored to what I need for me and my family and our specific medical issues.
In sum, if you want to use this book as a starting point for such naturally antibiotic remedies, it might be good for that. But it is in no sense comprehensive, much less strictly herbal. So do not have high expectations.
