Mitfreude: A Journey Towards Collective Joy

Mitfreude, a lesser-known concept in comparison to its opposite, schadenfreude, encapsulates a uniquely positive human trait.

While schadenfreude embodies pleasure derived from another’s misfortune, mitfreude, on the other hand, is the act of rejoicing in others’ happiness.

UNDERSTANDING MITFREUDE

Stemming from the German language, where ‘mit’ translates to ‘with,’ and ‘freude’ to ‘joy,’ mitfreude is a shared joy that encourages empathy, unity, and a more wholesome society.

In its simplest form, mitfreude is feeling joy in another’s joy. It invites individuals to participate in the happiness of others, a departure from self-centric happiness.

This paradigm shift allows for the broadening of one’s emotional spectrum, fostering a richer emotional life that acknowledges and appreciates others’ happiness.

In contrast to envy, which signifies dissatisfaction or discontent with another’s achievements or happiness, mitfreude offers a more generous approach.

It is an active choice to celebrate and share in others’ success rather than begrudge it.
