Introversion is one of the four basic personality traits in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Introverts are often characterized by their preference for spending time alone, rather than with other people. They tend to be more reserved and thoughtful when it comes to social interaction, preferring a quiet environment and deep conversations over loud parties or large groups. Though introversion is not synonymous with shyness, many introverts find themselves feeling uncomfortable in unfamiliar social situations.

The MBTI identifies sixteen distinct types that account for differences in how individuals perceive the world around them and make decisions based on those perceptions. Each type has different characteristics associated with it that help define its strengths and weaknesses. The eight introverted types — ISFJ, INFJ, INTJ, INFP, ISTP, ISFP, INTP and ISTJ — all share some common traits.

First and foremost is the need for alone time. Introverts often feel drained after social interactions and need a period of restorative solitude to recharge their energy levels. They are also more likely to be introspective thinkers who prefer to focus on their own thoughts rather than engage in small talk or idle chatter with others.
