Clogged hair follicles, also known as folliculitis, are small, inflamed bumps that can appear on any part of the body where there is hair growth. They are caused by a buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria in the hair follicle.
There are a few things you can do to treat clogged hair follicles:
- Wash your skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day. This will help to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin, which can help to prevent clogged hair follicles.
- Use an exfoliating scrub once or twice a week. This will help to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which can also help to prevent clogged hair follicles.
- Apply a warm compress to the affected area for 10–15 minutes several times a day. This will help to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Over-the-counter (OTC) antibiotic ointment or cream. This can help to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection.
- Prescription medication. In more severe cases, your doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic or a topical steroid cream.
If you have clogged hair follicles that are not responding to home treatment, you should see a doctor. They may be able to prescribe stronger medication or recommend other treatments.
