Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition mainly affecting the face, primarily effect by redness, visible blood vessels, and occasionally small red bumps. Although the exact cause is unknown, factors such as genetics, immune system dysregulation, abnormal blood vessel development, protein malfunction, and imbalances in the skin or gut microbiome may contribute.

Environmental or dietary triggers, including sun exposure, spicy food, and alcohol, can exacerbate symptoms and cause inflammation flare-ups.

In some individuals, this inflammation extends to the eyes, resulting in a condition called Ocular Rosacea.

Ocular Rosacea affects the eyes and eyelids, presenting symptoms such as:

  • Redness on the lid margin
  • Dry, red eyes
  • Burning sensation
  • Itchy, gritty eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Lifestyle Adjustments

Identify and Manage Triggers:

Keep a diary to track triggers like sunlight exposure, spicy foods, dairy, foods high in niacin (e.g., turkey, peanuts, tuna), and alcohol consumption (especially red wine).

Skin Care Routine:

Adopt a gentle skin care routine and avoid harsh eye makeup to help relieve symptoms.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Traditionally used for cosmetic purposes like hair removal and skin rejuvenation, IPL has emerged as an effective treatment for ocular rosacea and rosacea with prominent skin redness and blood vessels. IPL is a non-invasive procedure that emits controlled high-intensity light pulses targeting superficial abnormal blood vessels and reducing inflammation on the skin and eyelids.

The light energy causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing redness, and stimulates collagen production, facilitating healing and improving skin health. This therapy effectively manages the vascular and inflammatory components associated with rosacea, improving both skin and eye symptoms for a comprehensive solution.

If you are experiencing symptoms related to ocular rosacea, it is important to consult with an eye specialist for a thorough eye checkup. Skin type, medical history, and the severity of ocular rosacea are essential factors considered by your eye care clinic in determining the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
